World’s Best Cat Litter Review
The following review are the thoughts and opinions of yours truly, and no way am I paid to endorse the following product.
So I’ve been looking for an alternative cat litter for sometime. Okay, maybe not super actively looking, but it is definitely something that has been on the back of my mind for a while. Having done extensive research when my kits were kittens to find the best foods for them, aka natural, holistic, great quality ingredients, in addition to finding the best treats and toys, etc, I also wanted to find the best litter for them.
I’ve been using various clay-based litters over the years (some better than others), but I’m definitely at the point where I’m tired of dealing with how heavy it is; the amount of dust that comes out when you pour it; how it gets EVERYWHERE; and more importantly, tired of worrying about the potential health hazards for my kits if the clay gets stuck in their fur, and they ingest it when cleaning themselves.
Over the years, I’ve definitely noticed a trend in alternative cat litter offerings. I believe World’s Best Cat Litter (WBCL), was one of the first to market, and then other companies followed suit with shredded newspaper (soggy paper and ink? Gross!), walnut litter (Blue Buffalo, although this looks to be discontinued as of January 2018), and wheat based litter (Exquisicat).
I really like the fact that WBCL, Blue Buffalo, and Exquisicat’s litters are sourced from all natural materials, meaning that they’re easily renewable, more environmentally friendly in the decomposing sense, and that they’re potentially health friendlier. Of course, the thing that was holding me back was the cost. Obviously, it’s a little bit pricier; I had no idea how effective it would be; how long it would last (having two males; it seems like we go through quite a bit of resources!); nor did I have any idea if they would even use it.
So you can imagine my surprise and delight, when a representative for WBCL reached out to me about testing their litter and sharing my experience. Of course, I said yes!
For those with cats, you know how picky they can be, and so, when you’re transitioning food or litter, you’re supposed to do it gradually, so they become used to the new food or litter over time. I don’t know if this is a cross-species quality when it comes to males, but honestly, I’ve never really had an issue with changing foods or litter. They’re like food, yeahh, whatever. A litter box, yeahh, whatever. So when it came to testing out WBCL, I simply put it in a separate litter box while leaving other litter boxes out with the traditional clay litter, and what do you know, one of the cats used it!
Obviously, the downside of this method is I don’t know which cat used it, or if both. If it’s only one cat that’s using the litter that will definitely make it harder transitioning to the new type of litter. For the intent and purpose of this experiment though, I just wanted to see what the litter was like, and if any of the cats would use it.
WBCL claims that it’s quick clumping, 99% dust-free, has outstanding odor control, is lighter, and that it’s planet friendly. My initial impressions upon opening is yes, it is low dust, and is fairly light. I made Shoko go sit in the litter box for these images, but he was definitely like WTF Ma, I’m not going to go pee on command. You know, typical cat expressions.
Achilles, as always, is curious about what I do, and what’s going on, so surprisingly, he made the better model for these series of images.
After our little modeling shoot, I left the litter box with WBCL in their usual bathroom spot. The next day I checked in, and there was a little clump! And I was kind of excited, which sounds weird, but yeah. I think these are the kinds of things that only pet parents get excited about, haha.
I scooped out the clump, and I liked how it stayed together really well. The clump was also super light compared to scooping clay, as claimed, and honestly, I really couldn’t smell anything beyond the normal corn smell. Overall, I really like the product given everything, but obviously, at the end of the day, it’s up to the kits on whether or not they will use it or not. I think we’re at least 1 of 2 at the moment. I’m definitely going to start transitioning doing a mixture of the WBCL and clay litter, and see what happens from there. Stay tuned!
P.S. I also tried the lavender version, but it doesn’t seem like any of them are a fan. :/ Maybe the smell is too strong…
